The reign of Ashurnasirpal II (883–859 bc) saw a dramatic increase in the number of inscriptions, and ever-longer commemorative inscriptions were commissioned, mainly because this king had them inscribed all over the buildings of his new capital city Kalhu (section 37.6.2).
