Oct 12, 2018 · A clever filmmaker's second feature is a bloodied mess of a thriller with a preening villain and a bored heroine. Ebert calls the movie "a novel feature of the place is discussed by the first two characters we meet, Jeff Bridges' Father Daniel Flynn and Cynthia Erivo's Darlene Sweet, the lodging is built on top of the border between Nevada and California, and the hotel rooms are especially styled for each side. The movie opens with a teasing set piece that’s well executed and promising, but the rest of it is a bloody, drawn-out standoff plot in which a preening villain struts around being appalling while the camera eats up his every move.
Six strangers, (Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo, Dakota Johnson, Jon Hamm, Cailee Spaeny and Lewis Pullman) each with their own secrets, meet at the El Royale hotel of Lake Tahoe. Taking place over one night, alliances are made and secrets are revealed.
