Philip St. John Basil Rathbone MC (13 June 1892 – 21 July 1967) was an Anglo-South African actor. He rose to prominence in the United Kingdom as a Shakespearean stage actor and went on to appear in more than 70 films, primarily costume dramas, swashbucklers , and, occasionally, horror films.
Basil Rathbone was a versatile British actor who starred in films, theater and TV. He is best known for playing Sherlock Holmes, Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet, and various villains in costume dramas.

Upon graduating from Repton school in England in 1910, Rathbone made his stage debut in Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew in 1911.
