About. Basildon Park is a country house situated to the west of Reading, between the villages of Upper Basildon and Lower Basildon. It is owned by the National Trust and is a Grade I listed building. The house was built between 1776 and 1783 for Sir Francis Sykes in the Palladian style.
Basildon Park holds a collection heavy in 17th-20th century English and European paintings, including a series of Apostles by Batoni, a garden still life by the supremely talented 18th-century female artist Anne Vallayer-Coster, and a display of drawings by Sutherland for his Coventry Cathedral tapestry.
