  2. Apr 13, 2015 · As the latest entry on the weaker end of DC Animation's shared movie universe (the Batman thread), Batman vs. Robin is still not as big or epic as the Justice League animated features. Within its own lane, though, Batman vs. Robin has better storylines, production values and character designs than Damian Wayne's debut film, Son of Batman .

The followup to last year’s Son of Batman has come, and from the looks of the title -- Batman vs. Robin -- it’s clear that while Batman may be good at a great many things, father-son bonding is not among them. The story involves the villainous bourgeoisie known as the Court of Owls, who want to run Gotham City while wearing creepy masks. As part of their move to take out Batman, they set their sights on Robin, Batman’s son Damian Wayne, driving a rift between the dynamic duo. It’s a solid premise that starts out with some excellent moments, including the best Batman fight scene in recent memory, but at the halfway point it loses its way, resulting in an animated movie that doesn’t fulfill its awesome potential.

What potential is that, you say? This movie is a mix of Grant Morrison’s Batman and Robin stories and Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Court of the Owls arc -- two of the best entries in Batman’s comic library. To say Batman vs. Robin has a lot to live up to is putting it mildly.

The movie starts with Batman and Robin bickering at each other like only father and son can. When Talon, a ninja assassin of the Court of Owls, offers Robin the acceptance and freedom that he craves, he succeeds in setting the two on a collision course. There’s a palpable tension between Batman and Robin, and it’s their emotional back-and-forth that forms the core of the movie. Even when the plot takes a turn for the worse in the second half, their personal conflict still remains a highlight, voiced admirably by Jason O'Mara as Batman and Stuart Allan as Robin.

About that second half, let’s get to what went so wrong. We’ll avoid spoilers, but suffice to say that after a particular twist involving Robin and Talon, the logic of the movie flies the coop. Characters make extreme decisions for lame reasons or just no reason at all. Events unfurl in rapid succession in order to set up a final confrontation that doesn’t feel earned or even a natural extension of where the story was headed.

The core dynamic between the feuding Batman and Robin is the highlight of the movie, as you’d expect. A handful of action scenes are amazing, not to mention we get one of the best Batman fights in recent memory. Unfortunately, the plot unspools into a pile of illogical decisions and unclear motivations, failing to follow up on the excellent first h...
