Nov 12, 2020 · The cogwheel train terminates at the Zugspitze mountain at 2,600 metres (via Grainau and Eibsee) where you can take a cable car called “Gletscherbahn aerial cablecar” to the top. You can buy tickets at the train station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. See the train timetable here.
The Zugspitzbahn covers a total of 1,838 metres in altitude - from 705 metres up to 2,588 metres - and also passes through a tunnel over four kilometres long. From the Zugspitzplatt, a cable car then takes you up to the 2,962 metre-high eastern summit of the Zugspitze - the highest point in Germany.
A rack railway, the Bavarian Zugspitze Railway, runs inside the northern flank of the mountain and ends on the Zugspitzplatt, from where a second cable car runs a short way down to the Schneefernerhaus, formerly a hotel, but since 1999 an environmental research station; a weather station opened there in 1900.
