Settled in 1642, it developed around an Algonquian Indian trading post called the Shawsheen House. It was incorporated in 1729 and named for Bedford, England.

Services. About Bedford. Location. Bedford is located on the map of Massachusetts in Middlesex County-about fifteen miles northwest of Boston near the junction of routes 3 and 95 [128]. The Town may be accessed by car, and public transportation on the M.B.T.A. Taxi, shuttle and Logan Express connect to Boston's Logan Airport.
- Minuteman Commuter Bikeway. Three abandoned railroad lines converge at Bedford’s Depot Park complex, the most famous being the Minuteman Commuter Bikeway, which has its western trailhead here.
- Job Lane House. At 295 North Road you can tour a Colonial Saltbox house dating back to 1713. The grandson of one of the town’s earliest settlers, Job Lane served as a town officer and church deacon, and his son was a Minuteman who was wounded at the Battle of Concord.
- Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. On Bedford’s western margins, the banks of the Concord River are protected by the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge making up about 12 miles of riverfront between Billerica and Wayland.
- Bedford Free Public Library. Bedford’s excellent public library goes back to 1876, and moved into its current building in 1968 to meet the town’s fast-growing population.
