Elzie Wylie Baker Sr. (March 4, 1919 – April 14, 2002), better known as Buck Baker, was an American stock car racer. Born in Richburg, South Carolina, Baker began his NASCAR career in 1949 and won his first race three years later at Columbia Speedway. Twenty-seven years later, Baker retired after 1976 National 500 .
Petty’s main rival, David Pearson(2011), would start the race on the outside of Row 1, while Baker qualified sixth in his Ray Fox-owned 1964 Dodge. NASCAR pioneer Buck Baker was the first driver to win consecutive premier series championships, a feat he accomplished in 1956 and ’57.
Buck Baker was one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history, winning two championships and 46 races. He also competed in the Grand American division and was a living legend of stock car racing.
