The history of the German Navy is a long one: the historical roots of the unified German maritime forces reach back to 1848. Even then, their vessels were flying the colours black, red and gold. The navy of the Bundeswehr was founded during the Cold War. After German reunification, it became the German Navy. It is deployed on operations worldwide.
The Bundeswehr on Operations. Since the 1990s, the Bundeswehr has been active on long-term operations abroad, sometimes for years: initially in Bosnia and later in Kosovo, as well as on combat operations in Afghanistan. At the moment, German soldiers are deployed in Europe, Asia and Africa, as well as in the Mediterranean.
The Bundeswehr consists of the armed forces and the Federal Defence Administration. Both elements have their own specific tasks and particular strengths. Only together can they fulfil the Bundeswehr’s mission.
The Establishment of the Bundeswehr. The Bundeswehr was founded just ten years after the end of World War II and Germany’s surrender. However, a new confrontation had already begun. The Cold War helped give rise to the Bundeswehr.
Defence is the Bundeswehr’s most important mission. While national defence focusses on protecting the population in Germany, the Bundeswehr also engages in collective defence in close cooperation with other countries’ armed forces – which may sometimes involve combat on these countries’ territory.
The present-day German Army was founded in 1955 as part of the newly formed West German Bundeswehr together with the Marine (German Navy) and the Luftwaffe (German Air Force). As of January 2022, the German Army had a strength of 62,766 soldiers.
