A National Natural Landmark known for its old growth forest and summer home to one of the largest concentrations of American bald eagles on the East Coast, Caledon attracts bird watchers of all ages. To protect the eagles, access to marshes and the Potomac River is limited.

Oct 5, 2016 · Caledon State Park is an amazing place to photograph, and like several other Virginia State Parks, you can find fossil sharks’ teeth, fossil shells, and even crocodile teeth along the beach among the pebbles. They have a popular event where you get to kayak the coast, then beach your kayak and get tips from a Ranger on finding fossils.
Caledon State Park is situated on 2579 acres of mature forest along the Potomac river. Originally established in 1659, this area was owned and farmed for centuries by the Alexander family. It was donated to the state of Virginia by Mrs. Ann Hopewell Hewitt Smoot in 1974 and now is an important site for conservation.
Apr 24, 2021 · It’s a 2.8-mile hike from the parking area at Caledon State Park to the campground, mostly along the flat, gravel Hampstead Road Trail through old growth forest. There is no electricity or potable water. There is also no wi-fi (obviously), but the AT&T cell signal is quite strong and reliable from the primitive campground.
