Carteret is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 25,326, an increase of 2,482 (+10.9%) from the 2010 census count of 22,844, which in turn reflected an increase of 2,135 (+10.3%) from the 20,709 counted in the 2000 census.

1905. With Chrome Steel, Liebig Mfg., and U.S. Metals and Refining, the population began to explode. The area around these factories picks up the name of Chrome because of the many jobs it brought into the borough. 1906. The villages of Carteret and Chrome secede from Woodbridge Township and become known as the Borough of Roosevelt.
