Cecil B. DeMille. Cecil Blount DeMille ( / ˈsɛsəl dəˈmɪl /; August 12, 1881 – January 21, 1959) was an American filmmaker and actor. Between 1914 and 1958, he made 70 features, both silent and sound films. He is acknowledged as a founding father of American cinema and the most commercially successful producer-director in film history.

By 1931 DeMille, despite his huge successes in the silent era, was practically unemployable. Given a second chance at Paramount DeMille found his now classic formula of religious or epic tales with more than just a tinge of sex. Firmly re-established, he would stay with the studio for the rest of his career.
Turner Classic Movies will honor the legendary director, writer, producer and actor Cecil B. DeMille with the two-hour world premiere of Cecil B. DeMille: American Epic in April. The new documentary, narrated by Kenneth Branagh and featuring music by Elmer Bernstein, will be accompanied by a festival of more than 25 films in the epic genre.
