Celje (pronounced [ˈtsɛ̀ːljɛ] ⓘ, German: Cilli, German pronunciation: ⓘ) is the fourth-largest city in Slovenia. It is a regional center of the traditional Slovenian region of Styria and the administrative seat of the City Municipality of Celje ( Slovene : Mestna občina Celje ).

- Celje Castle. The Counts of Celje had the most powerful dynasty in Slovenia in the 14th and 15th centuries and their seat of power was this brooding castle just south of the modern city.
- The Old Landgraviate Building. Celje’s finest Renaissance building dates to the turn of the 17th century and backs onto the city’s southern walls beside the Savinja.
- Prince’s Mansion. Another residence for the Counts of Celje, this property has been recognised as a national monument. After their line died out in the 1456 this palace had many different roles, one of which was as a barracks during the rule of Empress Maria Theresa in the 1700s.
- Museum of Recent History. This museum about contemporary life in Celje has a few locations around the city, including a former Minorite monastery used by the Nazis and Josip Pelkan’s photography studio.

Aug 22, 2023 · Note that access to the castle can be by car to a carpark at the top. But there is still a slope and stairs to reach the inside. Inside the old castle are facilities and a snack bar. Old Celje castle opening hours – at least 10am to 4pm but longer in Summer (9am to 9pm) – see latest here. Small entrance fee.
Get in. 46°14′6″N 15°15′54″E. Map of Celje. Celje is halfway between Ljubljana and Maribor on the A1 highway, a one-hour drive from either. It is also served by Ljubljana - Maribor railway line with trains running twice an hour on workdays.
Feb 10, 2024 · Visiting Celje Castle. Today, Celje Castle has been renovated and the fort and grounds are open to be explored by visitors. Frederick’s Tower can be climbed for 360˚ views of the surrounding area and green hills in the distance. The Tower above Pelikan’s Trail, built in the 16th century, is also open to guests and has interesting displays.
