The Duke succeeded his father in 1892. He was a Knight of the Garter, and held many governmental positions. These include Paymaster-General of the Forces (1899-1902), Mayor of Woodstock (1907-1908), Under-Secretary of State to the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries (1917-1918), and finally Lord Lieutenant and custos rotulorum of Oxfordshire.
