Hawkhurst is a village and civil parish in the borough of Tunbridge Wells in Kent, England. The village is located close to the border with East Sussex, around 12 miles (19 km) south-east of Royal Tunbridge Wells and within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty .

Coordinates: 51.035°N 0.509°E. Collingwood is a 3-hectare (7.4-acre) nature reserve south of Hawkhurst in Kent. It is managed by the Kent Wildlife Trust. [1] This reserve is woodland which has many exotic species as well as native trees. It is centred on a lake which has birds such as mallards, kingfishers and moorhens. [1]

Herschel died on 11 May 1871 at age 79 at Collingwood, his home near Hawkhurst in Kent. On his death, he was given a national funeral and buried in Westminster Abbey. His obituary by Henry W Field of London was read to the American Philosophical Society on 1 December 1871.
