     First, you can eliminate most of those backslashes by using a character class instead of alternation. Then, as Christopher said, you can add a + to mimic StringTokenizer's behavior of matching one or more delimiter characters:

     "[{},()\\s]+"-

     Unfortunately, there's no way to prevent that first, empty token when the string starts with a delimiter. Trailing empty tokens are automatically dropped, but you have to filter out the leading one yourself.

     Of course, you're free to use StringTokenizer if you want, or a third-party tool like Guava's Splitter.

     I would prefer not to use String.trim to check for existence of whitespace. It is doing more work than you need, since it checks both ends of the string (even if non-whitespace was found at the other end) AND it returns a new String object. So I would prefer to implement a method to check for whitespace only.

     So my suggestion (if implementing yourself) would be as follows:

     public static boolean isNullOrEmpty(String s) { return s == null || s.length() == 0;}public static boolean isNullOrWhitespace(String s) { return s == null || isWhitespace(s);}private static boolean isWhitespace(String s) { int length = s.length(); if (length > 0) { for (int i = 0; i < length; i++) { if (!Character.isWhitespace(s.charAt(i))) { return false; } } return true; } return false;}

     Or taking a cue from String.trim's implementation, you could use character comparison rather than Character.isWhitespace():

     // checking for whitespace like String.trim() doesprivate static boolean isWhitespace(String s) { int length = s.length(); if (length > 0) { for (int i = 0; i < length; i++) { if (s.charAt(i) > ' ') { return false; } } return true; } return false;}

     Finally, I'd consider checking both ends of the string in each iteration, stepping inwards. This would minimize the number of iterations needed to get the answer, regardless of whether whitespace exists at the front or the end of the string.

     You can always see c#'s implementation through .net reflector or other decompiler:

     public static bool IsNullOrEmpty(string value){ if (value != null) return value.Length == 0; else return true;}

     and

     The Java String object has a format method (as of 1.5), but no join method.

     To get a bunch of useful String utility methods not already included you could use org.apache.commons.lang.StringUtils.

     No, there is nothing equivalent.

     Code folding is an IDE feature, not a language feature.

     Eclipse has code folding for classes and members when Java files are loaded in it. It may be extended (for example) to add code folding on carefully crafted comment lines.

     There are two big features/advantages that Java/C# have over C++:

     • Built-in garbage collection/managed memory. You don't have to worry about cleaning up your objects. Garbage collection is coming/available for C++ as well, but it's considerably less convenient to use. Java/C# make it like the air you breath. It hard to understate how much this can help your productivity and how much enjoyment this can add to your coding.
     • The Well-organized built-in API/library. C++ probably has a much larger library available to it, if for no other reason than it's been around much longer and you can run it on my platforms, Java and C# are set apart by the amount of time, depth, and organization that went into the library that actually ships with the language.

     On the other hand, Java/C# depend on an external runtime. The lack of this dependency means that C/C++ are everywhere. You can use C++ to program for almost any random esoteric platform out there, no matter what the constraints.
