Curtis Emerson LeMay (November 15, 1906 – October 1, 1990) was an American Air Force general who implemented an effective but controversial strategic bombing campaign in the Pacific theater of World War II. He later served as Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force, from 1961 to 1965.
General Curtis Emerson LeMay is the fifth chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. The general was born at Columbus, Ohio, in 1906. He attended Columbus public schools and Ohio State University. In 1928 he entered the armed services as a flying cadet.

LeMay was a staunch advocate of strategic bombing and continuously looked for ways to improve its effectivness. The most memorable of a string of firebombing raids was delivered against Tokyo on the night of March 9-10, 1945. It was also the first test of LeMay’s new doctrine of low-level attack.
