He has a bachelor’s degree in film from UCLA. When he was going to Kettle Moraine High School in Wales, Wisconsin, he worked weekends and evenings at the McDonald’s restaurant in Delafield.

He studied at University of Toledo School of Design, then located in the basement at the Toledo Museum of Art, and graduated with a degree in art in 1977. Later that year he moved to New York City, where he lived for almost two decades in the intellectual and artistic ferment of the East Village.
