David Hackett Souter (/ ˈ s uː t ər / SOO-tər; born September 17, 1939) is an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1990 until his retirement in 2009.

Souter’s father was a bank manager and his mother a store clerk. He spent his early childhood in a Boston suburb before his family moved to rural East Weare, New Hampshire, in 1950.

Three years later, Souter became deputy to the state Attorney General, Warren Rudman, who later became a United States Senator. When Rudman stepped down in 1976, Souter was appointed to take his place. Again quickly assuming new responsibilities, two years later, Souter was appointed Associate Justice of the New Hampshire Superior Court.
