One of Scotland’s most celebrated artists, Sir David Wilkie made his career painting lively scenes of everyday events and incidents. His work proved so popular at the Royal Academy’s summer exhibitions that one of his paintings was the first to have a barrier placed around it to protect it from the crowd of jostling viewers.

David Wilkie. (b Cults, nr. Cupar, Fife, 18 Nov. 1785; d at sea, off Gibraltar, 1 June 1841). Scottish painter, active mainly in London. He is principally famous as the most popular genre painter of his time, but he also produced historical subjects and portraits.
Wilkie was born at Cults, in Fifeshire, on 18 November 1785, the third son of the Reverend David Wilkie and his third wife, Isabella Lister. He was educated at local schools in Pitlessie, Kettle, and Cupar until the age of fourteen.
