David Wingo got his start composing music for films in David Gordon Green's debut feature George Washington, collaborating on the score with Michael Linnen. The movie went on to win numerous awards and eventually released on DVD by the Criterion Collection.

He is best known for scoring a number of director David Gordon Green's films as well as Jeff Nichols' 2011 Cannes winner Take Shelter. His collaboration with childhood friend Green began in the late 90's when he would provide music for some of Green's student films.
