Since then, death metal has diversified, spawning several subgenres. Melodic death metal combines death metal elements with those of the new wave of British heavy metal. Technical death metal is a complex style, with uncommon time signatures, atypical rhythms, and unusual harmonies and melodies.

- Autopsy – Mental Funeral (1991) Masters of the grotesque, purveyors of filth, lords of gore and THC-ravaged servants of hellish disgust, Autopsy sounded like no-one else when they slithered from the grubby Californian shadows into the death metal spotlight at the tail-end of the 80s.
- Bolt Thrower – War Master (1991) After ambushing everyone with 1989’s classic Realm Of Chaos, Bolt Thrower proved their deathly credentials by repeating the trick.
- Decapitated – Nihility (2002) Decapitated’s latterday career has been marked by tragedy (the 2007 tourbus crash which killed drummer Vitek and left singer Covan paralysed) and controversy (rape charges were brought against all four members in 2017, before being droopped).
- Dissection – Storm Of The Light’s Bane (1995) While Sweden’s Dissection were very much black metal in terms of ideology and atmosphere, they also featured noticeable elements of the melodic death metal movement exploding in their home country, as well as classic ‘80s heavy metal.
- Gatecreeper. It's no surprise to anyone that Gatecreeper have taken the world by storm. The Arizona death metal powerhouse have it all – incredible riffs, believable ferocity, fifty-story production, a killer name, and a live show that will make any attendee move.
- Spectral Voice. It doesn’t necessarily make Spectral Voice’s music better that they only perform with all the lights turned off. But it does speak to the artistic dedication one can hear in the tunes of this Denver outfit.
- Temple Of Void. Detroit’s Temple Of Void have been hyped up heavily in the underground since the release of 2014’s Of Terror And the Supernatural, and every word of that praise is deserved.
- Venom Prison. Rarely does a death metal band match their message with momentum quite like Venom Prison do. The South Wales five-piece take an approach to their art and lyrics that might make your typical conservative death metaller uncomfortable, but they back it up with so much vehemence and power – dear God, that fucking guitar tone!

- Death. Orlando, Florida metallers Death are considered the pioneers of the death metal genre, with their 1987 debut album, Scream Bloody Gore, regarded as the scene’s spearhead.
- Cannibal Corpse. Cannibal Corpse’s imagery is as iconic as it is horrifying. From their 1990 debut album, Eaten Back To Life, through to Butchered At Birth, Tomb Of The Mutilated and 2017’s Red Before Black, they have racked up two million sales, making them death metal’s biggest-selling band of all time.
- Obituary. Florida was a hotbed for death metal in the 80s, and if Death were frontrunners of the scene, Tampa’s Obituary took it to a wider audience.
- Morbid Angel. Formed in 1983, Morbid Angel’s first four albums – Altars Of Madness (1989), Blessed Are The Sick (1991), Covenant (1993) and Domination (1995) – are consistently held up as death metal classics.

- Burner – It All Returns To Nothing. On their debut album, Burner instantly announced themselves as rising stars in the stacked UK metal scene. It All Returns To Nothing routinely crashed the muscular riffs of death metal into hardcore’s scurrying drums and seismic breaks, but it’s the songs that barged even further that felt truly special.
- Cannibal Corpse – Chaos Horrific. Another year, another brilliantly brutal Cannibal Corpse album. Sixteen albums in and the magic still hasn't faded on Chaos Horrific, it's insistent viciousness setting the nerves on edge and making you want to gnash your way through your own cheeks.
- Cattle Decapitation – Terrasite. With each new release Cattle Decapitation have found new ways to stun and disorient with vicious barrages of extremity.
- Crypta – Shades Of Sorrow. Crypta have been personally endorsed by Morbid Angel’s Trey Azagthoth, so you know they’re fucking good without even hearing a note.
