Death of a Tea Master ( Japanese: 千利休 本覺坊遺文, Sen no Rikyu: Honkakubô ibun also known as Sen no Rikyū: Honkakubo's Student Writings) is a 1989 Japanese biographical drama film directed by Kei Kumai. [1] . It is based on real life events of Sen no Rikyū during the late Muromachi period, particularly the events surrounding his ritual suicide.

The story of tea master Sen no Rikyu told through the dreams and faded memories of one of his few surviving disciples, Honkakubo. A movie about chasing ghosts and getting lost in a tangle of memory. Great masters and artists lost to the violent ebbs and flows of history and the arbitrary whims of powerful men.
Years after the death of legendary tea master Sen no Rikyu, his disciple Honkakubo attempts to resolve the mystery of the master's final days. Honkakubo communes with his memories of Rikyu and discusses his philosophy with other disciples in an effort to understand Rikyu's final split from his longtime patron, the warlord Hideyoshi Toyotomi.
