The Trump Card (French: Dernier atout) is a 1942 French crime film directed by Jacques Becker and starring Mireille Balin, Raymond Rouleau and Pierre Renoir. [1] The film marked Becker's full debut as a director, although he had briefly worked on Cristobal's Gold in 1940. It was filmed partly on the French Riviera, which stood in for South America.

Dernier atout appears slight compared with the director's subsequent masterpieces and is now all but overlooked, not without reason. Whilst this first Becker offering is a competently mounted production, technically on a par with B-movie thrillers being churned out on the other side of the Atlantic, its 'second hand' tag is all too visible.

Finally managed to watch one more by Jacques Becker who after only three movies started to look like one of my favorite French directors. Dernier atout is lower in quality, understandably as it is his first, and pretty nonchalant while trying to be sly which puts an annoying gleam on it but also provides a reason to keep watching as the film ramps up in entertainment.
