Don Juan's Reckless Daughter leans heavily, at least musically, toward a contemporary jazz idiom. The players - Jaco Pastorius and Wayne Shorten from Weather Report, Chaka Khan of Rufus and Latinesque jazz supremo Airto - are all jazz players of immense ability.
In the latter song, Joni, with sultry vocal support from Chaka Khan, is backed only by a percussion ensemble; but this time, it is not furious abandon of the sort we hear on "The Tenth World," but an even, swinging beat. Side Four's "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" offers the key, as I've said, to the duality theme that permeates the record.
