US seeks attempted assassination charge against Trump suspect
Reuters Videos6 hours agoSTORY: Federal authorities want to charge Ryan Routh, the man accused of hiding with a gun at Donald Trump's Florida golf course, with attempted assassination. If convicted, he could face life in prison. Routh was arrested on September 15 and appeared in court Monday for a hearing. He was handcuffed and shackled at the waist, in front of U.S. Magistrate Judge Ryon McCabe. There, prosecutors claimed Routh wrote a letter months earlier... ... referencing an "assassination attempt" on the Republican presidential candidate and a $150,000 bounty on his life. According to a court filing, several months prior to the incident Routh dropped a box off at the home of an unidentified civilian witness. It contained a handwritten letter that said: (quote box) "This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you ... I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job." A lawyer representing Routh argued that perhaps the letter was a publicity stunt. Prosecutors also said Routh's car contained a handwritten list of dates in August, September and October of places where Trump had appeared or was expected to appear. They added Routh assembled a "sniper's nest" near the sixth hole of Trump's West Palm Beach golf course in an attempt to kill him... ... and was only stopped when a U.S. Secret Service agent opened fire. Routh so far has been charged with possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. He has not yet entered a plea. After hearing from prosecutors, Judge McCabe ordered Routh to be detained without bond pending trial on the two gun-related charges. Trump in a statement Monday called Routh's charges inadequate, labelling them a "slap on the wrist" against a "maniac assassin". The incident in Florida came two months after another gunman wounded Trump on the ear during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

- 1:22Harris says she is trying to get a second debate with TrumpReuters VideosSTORY: :: September 20, 2024 :: Atlanta, Georgia :: Kamala Harris says she is trying to get a second debate with Trump :: "I'm trying to get another debate. We'll see. But in our debate last week, remember when he said everyone wanted Roe v Wade to be overturned? Well, exactly. I don't know where everyone is either because women have been arrested and charged for miscarriages. They didn't want that." :: Harris also addresses deaths tied to abortion bans in states including Georgia "One in three women in America lives in a state with a Trump abortion ban. This includes Georgia and every state in the South except Virginia. Think about that when you also combine that with what we know has been longstanding neglect around an issue like maternal mortality. Think about that when you compound that with what has been long standing neglect of women in communities with a lack of the adequate resources they need for health care; prenatal, during their pregnancy, postpartum. Think about that. And these hypocrites want to start talking about 'this is in the best interest of women and children'. Well, where have you been? Where have you been when it comes to taking care of the women and children of America." Harris and Trump debated each other for the first time on Sept. 10, in a contest that polls showed was won by the Democratic nominee. Trump last week said he would not participate in another debate against Harris before the Nov. 5 election.3 days ago
