Pablo Picasso (1935–1943) Henriette Theodora Markovitch (22 November 1907 – 16 July 1997), known as Dora Maar, was a French photographer, painter, and poet. Jul 16, 1997 · Dora Maar was born Henrietta Theodora Markovitch on November 22, 1907 in Tours, France. Her father was Croatian and became an architect; her mother was French and brought up in the Catholic faith. Maar spent most of her childhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where her father worked on a number of projects.
In 1932, Maar established a photographic studio with art director and set designer Pierre Kéfer, and published commercial advertising and fashion studies under the name “Kéfer-Dora Maar.” She befriended Jacqueline Lamba, then the wife of André Breton, the leader of the Surrealist group, and artists like Man Ray, for whom she also modeled.
Dora Maar met Pablo Picasso in early 1936. Their relationship lasted 7 years. Dora was Picasso's companion and inspiring muse, and his monumental shadow gradually began to dominate her. It was an artistically very rich period for the painter who, in 1937, began the great work Guernica.
