The physical location of Doubleday Field has been hosting games since 1909. The field was formally dedicated as Doubleday Field in 1939, baseball’s centennial year. The stadium has undergone numerous renovations over the years, with major work being done in 1996 and again in 2013.
Late 19th Century | Doubleday Field. In 1838, Elihu Phinney purchased an open plot of land in the center of Cooperstown from the Bealle family. Just two years after Phinney obtained the land, Abner Doubleday reportedly used Phinney’s field for the first baseball game.

Construction Through The WPA Era. In 1919, when the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce first obtained the lease on Phinney’s lot with the intention of re-christening it Doubleday Field, the land was undeveloped pasture. The village’s swift decision to develop the lot aligned with cross-country trends that standardized ballparks.
