She was the only child of her parents, Thomas Ellett Eggleston, an insurance salesman, and Dovey Estelle Caro, a nurse. She graduated from Memphis Tech High School in 1955 and then went on to study medicine at Memphis State College, hoping to follow in her mother’s footsteps.
