  5. Down in the Depths. Biography. After a gig with Gene Krupa & His Orchestra in the late 1940s, vocalist Bill Black appeared to be on his way toward stardom. Voted fourth best band singer in a 1949 Down Beat magazine readers' poll, the specter of success, fame or fortune had alluded him.
