Duke Maximilian Joseph of Bavaria, known informally as Max in Bayern, was a member of a junior branch of the royal House of Wittelsbach who were Kings of Bavaria, and a promoter of Bavarian folk-music. He is most famous today as the father of Empress Elisabeth of Austria ("Sisi") and great-grandfather of King Leopold III of Belgium.
The first king of Bavaria was Max Joseph of the House of Wittelsbach. He’s considered the creator of the modern Bavarian state. His subjects valued his honest and modest nature, although he came from a rather illustrious household that gave him a somewhat chaotic childhood.
