Edward Estlin (E.E.) Cummings was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He attended the Cambridge Latin High School, where he studied Latin and Greek. Cummings earned both his BA and MA from Harvard, and his earliest poems were published in Eight Harvard Poets (1917).
E(dward) E(stlin) Cummings claimed to have composed a poem a day for 14 years. Cummings developed a unique style of writing, full of experimentation with form, spelling, syntax, and punctuation. Also a painter, he called himself “an author of pictures, a draughtsman of words.” Cummings’s novel The Enormous Room describes his time spent in a World War I prison camp.

I did a long-term poetry study on e.e. cummings for a college poetry course. I studied, specifically, 'anyone lived in a pretty how town,' and by breaking up and focusing on the words, then the lines, then the stanzas, over a long period of time, the greater meaning and symbolism of his poetry really stood out and not only made perfect sense to me, but also was incredibly poignant and beautiful.
