Edward Henry Gordon Craig [notes 1] CH OBE (born Edward Godwin; 16 January 1872 – 29 July 1966), sometimes known as Gordon Craig, was an English modernist theatre practitioner; he worked as an actor, director and scenic designer, as well as developing an influential body of theoretical writings. Craig was the son of actress Dame Ellen Terry .

Edward Gordon Craig was an English actor, theatre director-designer, producer, and theorist who influenced the development of the theatre in the 20th century. Craig was the second child of a liaison between the actress Ellen Terry and the architect Edward William Godwin.
His Life. Edward Henry Gordon Craig was born in Stevenage, UK in January 1872. His mother, Ellen Terry ( 1847-1928 ), was to become the leading actress of her generation. His father was Edward Godwin (1833-1886), a talented architect, furniture and costume designer.
