Edward IV (April 28, 1442 – April 9, 1483) was King of England from March 4, 1461, to April 9, 1483, with a break of a few months in the period 1470–1471. Edward IV's memory is most closely linked with the Wars of the Roses between the house of York, to which he belonged, and the house of Lancaster, to which Henry VI belonged.
With the support of the powerful Earl of Warwick, known as 'the Kingmaker', Edward defeated the Lancastrians in a series of battles, culminating in the Battle of Towton in 1461.
