Engelbert Humperdinck, whose real name is Arnold George Dorsey, was born in Madras, British India (which is now known as Chennai, India) on2 May 1936. He was born to parents Mervyn Dorsey and Olive Dorsey. His father was a non-commissioned officer in the British Army at the time. He has nine siblings, and his family moved to Leicester, England, when he was just ten years old. By the early 1950’s he was playing saxophone in Nightclubs. His impression of popular American singer and actor Jerry Lewis was spot on, which led to his friends calling him “Gerry Dorsey.” He worked under his name for almost ten years. He was then called into the British Army Royal Corps of Signals during the mid-1950s. After finishing that, he recorded his first song, “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” in 1958, which was with Decca records.
Engelbert Humperdinck married popular English actress Patricia Healey on the 18thof April, 1964. Together they have four children- Scott, Jason, Louise, and Bradley.
