Maximilian, the adventurous second son of Archduke Franz Karl, was invited as part of Napoleon III 's manipulations to take the throne of Mexico, becoming Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico.
Mai 1579 war er mit einer Großdemonstration der Wiener Protestanten vor der Hofburg konfrontiert. Ab 1590 führte er zusätzlich die Vormundschaft über die Söhne des Erzherzogs Karl von Innerösterreich ( Ferdinand II. ). 1593 zum Statthalter in den Niederlanden ernannt, zog er 1594 in Brüssel ein, starb aber bereits ein Jahr darauf.
