At 16, she made her stage debut after quitting school to joined a stock company. After appearing in minor roles in two films under her real name, Eunice Quedens, she found that the stage offered her the same minor roles.

Eve Arden decided on her name after being inspired by the names on two cosmetic bottles, Evening in Paris perfume and Elizabeth Arden. In the late 1930s, Ms. Arden made 20 movies in three years, always playing the funny, sarcastic friend.
