Robinson was given a peerage in January 1827, becoming Viscount Goderich. A month later, Liverpool resigned. Canning replaced him and he asked Goderich to become Leader of the House of Lords and War and Colonial Secretary.

The second creation came in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1827 in favour of the Honourable F. J. Robinson. He was a great-great-grandson of the first Duke of Kent. In 1833 he was further honoured when he was made Earl of Ripon. For further history of this creation, see Marquess of Ripon .
Fate. Canning, who was in poor health at the time of his appointment, died in office on 8 August 1827, and the Leader of the House of Lords F. J. Robinson, 1st Viscount Goderich, 1st Earl of Ripon succeeded him as Prime Minister.
