An orphan (from the Greek: ορφανός, romanized: orphanós) is a child whose parents have died, are unknown or have permanently abandoned them. It can also refer to a child who has lost only one parent, as the Hebrew translation, for example, is "fatherless".
Globally, over 80% of children in orphanages have a living parent. Up to 8 million children are thought to be living in orphanages. Children who grow up in orphanages are at much higher risk of becoming victims of violence, trafficking and exploitation.
