Arlene Bradford (Bette Davis) is a careless socialite playing criminal in San Francisco's underworld, along with her ineffectual fiancé (Lyle Talbot), and unaware of the consequences her actions can bring. When Arlene's naivety leads to her disappearance, her grounded sister, Val (Margaret Lindsay), takes it upon herself to investigate.
