Jun 12, 2023 · INTRODUCTION. Frailty is most often defined as an aging-related syndrome of physiological decline, characterized by marked vulnerability to adverse health outcomes. Frail older patients often present with an increased burden of symptoms including weakness and fatigue, medical complexity, and reduced tolerance to medical and surgical interventions.
Many people mistakenly assume frailty is part of normal aging. It’s true that many aging persons do become frail, but there are a number of interventions that can prevent or even reverse frailty.

Frailty is a common clinical syndrome in older adults that carries an increased risk for poor health outcomes including falls, incident disability, hospitalization, and mortality (1-5). Elucidating its etiology and natural history is therefore critical for identifying high risk subsets and new arenas for frailty prevention and treatment.
The course of frailty is characterised by a decline in functioning across multiple physiological systems, accompanied by an increased vulnerability to stressors. Having frailty places a person at increased risk of adverse outcomes, including falls, hospitalisation, and mortality.

Frailty is a complex age-related clinical condition characterised by a decline in physiological capacity across several organ systems, with a resultant increased susceptibility to stressors.
You or a loved one may be considered frail if three or more of these criteria, developed by Johns Hopkins, apply to you: You’re shrinking. You’ve unintentionally lost 10 or more pounds in the past year. You feel weak. You have trouble standing without assistance or have reduced grip strength. You feel exhausted.
