Göttingen seems to pulsate with a thirst for knowledge. This is a city shaped by students and academic life more than anywhere else in Germany. A total of 44 Nobel laureates are associated with Göttingen. Some were born in the city, while others came here to study, teach or conduct research.
- Gänseliesel. On Göttingen’s central marketplace in front of the old town hall is an Art Nouveau fountain and statue that has been here since 1901. The statue is pretty enough, and represents a girl carrying a pair of geese, one in a basket and another in her right hand.
- Altes Rathaus. Göttingen’s old town hall was first raised in 1270 and spent more than 700 years as the city’s administrative centre. Since 1978 the building has held Göttingen’s tourist office, while its spectacular main hall is hired out for weddings.
- St. Jacobi. A three nave Gothic hall church, St. Jacobi was begin in 1361 and completed by 1433. The tower, crested by a white Baroque dome, is the tallest structure in the old town at 72 metres.
