The Galleria dell’Accademia was established in the XVIII century as a teaching facility for students of the adjacent Academy of Fine Arts, founded in 1784 by Grand Duke Peter Leopold of Lorraine.
Galleria dell’Accademia, museum of art in Florence chiefly famous for its sculptures by Michelangelo, notably his David, which was transferred from the Piazza della Signoria in 1873. The museum also has a collection of 15th- and 16th-century paintings and many 13th–16th-century Tuscan paintings.
