Director Jacques Rivette, in “Gang of Four,” has little need of men. There is only one in the entire film, and he exists more or less as a hostile parasite; leeching off the desires and dreams of the work’s female characters. It is almost as if Rivette was allowing himself a rebirth through embrace of the feminine.
