The Gates of the Mountains, as it is known today, is one of the most widely recognized landmarks of the Lewis and Clark expedition. There are approximately 53 miles of trails in this 28,562 acre Wilderness area, some of which are located in lower and dryer elevations making it suitable for spring trips when other areas are still under snow.
U.S. Forest Service. The Gates of the Mountains Wilderness is located in the U.S. state of Montana. Created by an act of Congress in 1964, the wilderness is managed by Helena National Forest. A day use campground near the Gates of the Mountains, Meriwether Picnic site, is named in honor of Meriwether Lewis .

The 1918 construction of Holter Dam impacted the canyon by significantly raising the water level and reducing the current. Otherwise, the wilderness character is largely intact. It is located within the Gates of the Mountain Wilderness and managed by Helena National Forest.
Mar 25, 2024 · The over 28,000 acres and over 50 miles of trails that make up the Gates of the Mountains Wilderness Area border the Missouri River heading north from Upper Holter Lake. The pristine, wild, and roadless wonder of the entire wilderness area can be accessed from stops along the southern portion of Holter Lake.

Proof that indigenous people lived here long before Meriwether named it the Gates of the Mountains. The tour’s main attraction, though, is the inexhaustible scenery – wooded slopes, rugged rock formations, and the placid beauty of the timeless Missouri.
