Orvon Gene Autry, the grandson of a Baptist minister, was born in a farmhouse near Tioga, Texas and first performed as a boy soprano in his grandfather’s church choir. Subsequently, Autry mastered a $12 Sears mail-order guitar, which he used to accompany his singing at local events.
