George Dewey (1837-1917) was an American naval officer whose victory over the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay in 1898 made him a national hero. Born in Montpelier, Vermont, in 1837, Dewey graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis and saw distinguished service in the Gulf of Mexico during the American Civil War.

This was to be no friendly port call to the capital city of the Philippines, a Spanish colony for over 300 years.
After the Battle of Manila Bay, Dewey became a much-heralded celebrity and was promoted to admiral. From 1899 until his death in 1917, he held a powerful leadership position as president of the General Board of the Navy Department, which crafted naval policy.
