A member of the prominent Montagu family, Lord Sandwich was the son of Sir Sidney Montagu, youngest brother of Henry Montagu, 1st Earl of Manchester (from whom the Dukes of Manchester descend), and Edward Montagu, 1st Baron Montagu of Boughton (from whom the Dukes of Montagu descended).

George Montagu (Brudenell), 1st Duke of Montagu, Marquess of Monthermer, 4th Earl of Cardigan, Baron Brudenell KG (1712–1790) created 1st Baron Montagu of Boughton, (with a special remainder to the younger sons of his daughter, who had married the 3rd Duke of Buccleuch).
It was first created in the Peerage of England in 1705 for Ralph Montagu, 3rd Baron Montagu of Boughton, with the subsidiary title Marquess of Monthermer, but became extinct in 1749. The 1st Duke had been created Earl of Montagu and Viscount Monthermer in 1689.
