He assumed the throne on December 11, 1936, after his brother Edward VIII abdicated in order to marry Wallis Warfield Simpson of the United States.
King George VI paid State Visits to France in 1938, and to Canada and the United States in 1939, the first British monarch to enter the United States. His greatest achievements came during the Second World War, when he remained for most of the time at Buckingham Palace (the Palace was bombed nine times during the war).
The coronation of George VI and his wife, Elizabeth, as king and queen of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth, Emperor and Empress consort of India took place at Westminster Abbey, London, on Wednesday 12 May 1937.

Known as the ‘Reluctant King’, George VI is universally recognised as the father of the late Queen Elizabeth II and for his pronounced stammer, which was the focus of the Oscar-winning British movie The King’s Speech.
