In early sixteenth century, Spanish and Portuguese explorers were exploring the west and Francis I was concerned that France would fall behind. Verrazzano convinced the King that he was the right man to lead the voyages.

He became the first European to sail the east coast from Florida to Nova Scotia.
Florentine Giovanni da Verrazano in 1523-24 explored the southern and central coast of what became North Carolina while carrying out a reconnaissance of North America for the king of France. He made landfall around 21 Mar. 1524 at a spot he named "Selva di Lauri" (Forest of Laurels), probably in the vicinity of Cape Fear, and sailed south.
